Today at Year 7 & 8 Extension we had very grateful day when a nice lady come named ” Jennifer ” who worked in a company called ” Fisher & Paykel “. Jennifer taught us all about the science of washing machines, in how they work and how they show Chemical Action, Mechanical Action and Thermal Action.
Mechanical Action means a physical interaction or movement involving forces and objects, often related to how things move or are manipulated.
Now Chemical Action process where chemicals interact, resulting in changes at the molecular level, often leading to the formation of new substances.
Then we have Thermal Action referring to the impact of temperature changes on structures, materials, or systems.
We learnt how to make theories and hypothesis’ with washing machines. Later on we got to do a Scientific Experiment with plastic bottles, cloths and detergent.
First we had to take the lid off our bottle then put in the first three cloths into our bottle, then Jennifer was to come around and put in a special cloth, then we were to put in the last regular cloths in. Jennifer divided the 4 into 2 with water and detergent and the rest with just water.
The two with just water had to shake the bottle, while the ones with detergent and water just tipped the water bottle nicely. We had to pass the four bottles around in a circle of seven after ten shakes each.
Then Jennifer emptied the water bottles, put the special cloth on a paper towel and next we had to carry the special cloth in the paper towel to an iron where we took out the special cloth and lay it under the iron to dry it. Then Jennifer is going now to take the cloths to test and see what is the difference.
Big Thank You Jennifer for teaching us the science of washing machines!
