Fisher & Paykel 2: Types of Clothing and How They Shrink!

Remember the time when we had Mrs Jennifer Paykel come visit us the last time about the Experiment in how washing machines work and if they work with either low mechanical action and high chemical action or high mechanical and low chemical action. And guess what, you might already know which one was better and you guessed it low mechanical action and high chemical action!. But today was something new, today we learnt about different fabrics, why they shrink and how to stop them from shrinking.

We did many mini little experiments like the one with the plastic zippers, had a play with the cotton balls to learn how they grew and what grew them, using string and measurements to see how it evolved under the water and learnt how to work a  loom.

We had a fun blast having a go at all of these fun activities and a one I forgot to mention now was using different fabrics and how they feel on clothing. In which was able to guess the differences as one was fuzzy and the other smooth and soft. We had a fun time with Mrs Jennifer and we hope she can visit Point England School again. Thank you Mrs Jennifer for teaching us both washing machines and clothing!

Kia Ora and massive shout to Mrs Jennifer from Fisher & Paykel

MakeCode Microbit AI

Today at Year 7&8 Extension we have been learning all about coding Microbits. In case you don’t know anything about Microbits, they are like tiny computers with AI connected to them. At Extension we used Makecode Microbit AI to code our movement try to see if the Microbit can guess if we are either Shaking or Swinging. The site does this by recording our movement of running then as it recognises the same line graph as the one it first recorded. The parts of our Microbits we used to code was the processor, radios and LED lights.

Some things that didn’t work out however  was when we tried to make AI guess we were Spinning but instead of guess Spinning it got confused with Swinging. Because when it recorded both Swinging and Spinning the radio waves  were quite the same so AI though we were Swinging instead of Spinning so we had to change Spinning to Shaking.

I didn’t just do it by by myself I had a wonderful group of people to help me. Thanks to our teamwork we were able to record movement with AI.

I have learnt something new today which was how to code a tiny computer to guess or sense movement. If you have a Microbit I suggest you try this site out! In that case you’ll be able to code your Microbit to guesss movement! Hope you learnt something new as well. Please leave a positive comment on my blog.
